Subject Indexing

The high quality of the database is guaranteed by the rigorous selection of literature and its detailed indexation.

Selecting from their own library acquisitions and also internet sources, subject experts from the eleven participating research institutes decide which literature is to be documented and indexed in WAO – World Affairs Online.

Indexing in WAO – World Affairs Online is done at several levels:

  • allocation of subject and regional class
  • allocation of controlled terms to describe the main subject content
  • allocation of second group of controlled terms to describe aspects or details of the content
  • addition of an abstract (in some cases)

Classification and indexation are carried out using resources developed by FIV for the field of international relations and area studies:

The existence of these resources in a choice of languages enables non-German speakers to search in WAO – World Affairs Online. This feature is currently available in the IREON Gateway and in the Einiras Database Network (EDN).

New: Development aid policy focus in IREON

Inwent – Capacity Building International, the German government organisation to carry out human resource development and worldwide dialogue in the framework of development cooperation, now provides its main literature database LITDOK for research in IREON.

The LITDOK database includes 190,000 bibliographic references to journal articles, books, internet documents and grey literature.
The main focus of this collection is on development cooperation, developing countries and global economic development policy.

LITDOK uses subject terms of the "Thesaurus for economic and social development" for content description.
